Hair Extension Care

Washing your hair

  • Don't shampoo your hair for at least 48 hours after your extensions have been applied. This allows the attachment site to set

  • Use recommended aftercare products BCY Artistry to maximize potential wear and protect attachment site.

  • Lather gently from roots to tips, don't use a rough scrubbing motion

  • When rinsing, tilt your head slightly back and let the water fall through the length, this prevents knotting

  • Finish by applying a hair mask or conditioner after every wash

Drying your hair

  • Gently de-tangle your hair before drying, following the brushing recommendations:

  • Towel dry your hair with a soft pressure, but never with a rubbing motion. Instead, use a blotting motion and wrap your hair in a towel to remove excess water.

  • Always dry your attachments thoroughly, do not let dry naturally as hair is at its most vulnerable when wet. Blow dry on a low heat, starting at the roots and working downwards with the recommended brush provided to you.

  • Remember that styling products should only be applied to the lengths and ends of your hair and never to the attachment point of your hair extensions.

Brushing your hair

  • Always use a hair extension brush which are specifically designed to protect the hair extensions

  • Using a Boar Bristle Paddle Brush, sweep all hair to one side, holding hair in place at the nape of the neck, brush through the length

  • Remember not to be too rough when brushing your hair as this may damage the attachment site

  • When backcombing, take care to only do so below the bond attachment to prevent knotting.

SLEEPING

  • At night, tie your hair in a loose ponytail or a braid to prevent tangling and always choose a silk pillowcase or bonnet to avoid friction.

EXERCISE & LIFESTYLE

Please be mindful of the following activities, which may affect the lifespan of your hair extensions if daily or frequently repeated:

  • Swimming, particularly in seawater and chlorinated water

  • Sauna or steam room use

  • Excessive aerobic activity.

Hair Topper and Wig Care

Daily Care

  • Gentle Brushing: Use a wide-tooth comb or soft-bristle brush. Start at the ends and work upward to avoid tugging at the base or attachments.

  • Avoid Over-Manipulation: Limit excessive touching, pulling, or tight hairstyles that stress the attachment points.

  • Protect from Sun: Prolonged sun exposure can fade color and weaken hair. Recommend hats or scarves outdoors.

Washing Routine

  • Frequency: Wash every 10–15 wears, or as needed if the topper feels dirty or oily. If wearing semi-permanently, shampoo every 7-14 days.

  • Preparation: Gently detangle before washing to prevent breakage.

  • Shampoo: Use a sulfate-free, gentle shampoo. Apply by smoothing through the hair, avoiding harsh rubbing and the base/attachment area.

  • Rinsing: Rinse thoroughly with cool or lukewarm water, ensuring all product is removed, especially near the base.

  • Conditioner: Apply a lightweight, silicone-free conditioner from mid-lengths to ends, avoiding the base to prevent loosening knots or adhesive.

  • Deep Conditioning: Once a month, use a deep conditioning treatment for moisture and softness, but avoid the base.

Drying

  • Pat Dry: Gently blot with a microfiber towel. Never wring, twist, or rub the hair.

  • Air Dry: Place the topper on a wig stand or mannequin head to air dry and maintain its shape. Avoid blow dryers unless absolutely necessary, and always use a heat protectant.

  • If wearing semi-permanently, Blow dry roots and scalp until 100% dry. Letting topper air dry can cause mold and scalp irritation.

Styling

  • Limit Heat: Use heat tools sparingly, on low to medium settings, and always apply a heat protectant spray.

  • Avoid Heavy Products: Limit gels, sprays, and creams, as buildup requires more frequent washing and can weigh down the hair.

  • Blend with Natural Hair: Style your natural hair to match the topper for a seamless look.

Storage (When Not Worn)

  • Wig Stand or Mannequin Head: Keeps shape and prevents matting.

  • Cool, Dry Place: Avoid direct sunlight and dust. For travel, use a silk or satin bag.

Professional Maintenance

  • Regular Checkups: Schedule periodic appointments for professional cleaning, tightening, or reattachment as needed.

  • Trim Split Ends: Have the topper trimmed every few months to keep it looking fresh and natural.

Additional Tips

  • Avoid Sleeping with Wet Hair: If sleeping in the topper, ensure it is completely dry to prevent matting, tangling and scalp irritation.

  • Be Gentle with Attachments: If the topper is bonded or sewn in, avoid excessive moisture and manipulation at the attachment points to prevent premature loosening.

  • Swimming: Avoid swimming in chlorine or saltwater as this can shorten the wear time of the topper.
